Boil Water in 90 seconds... Really?

The new Electrolux's stove claims, "Water can now be boiled in 90 seconds." Hmmm, 90 seconds huh. You are telling me that all of a sudden we have developed a stove that can boil water in 90 seconds instead of the usual 7-10 minutes it takes on a regular stove. Am I the only one who thinks this is the most amazing thing ever? Who invented this? Did some one win the Nobel Prize for this? I mean 90 seconds? I'm not sure why this hasn't been on the cover of every scientific journal for the last year, but this seems like a pretty amazing break through to me. Now if someone could lend me $2500 that would be great. I will let you boil water anytime you want.

i think the same thing EVERY time i see this commercial! seriously? what super powers does this stove have that others don't?

i'd love to hear you and mike's commentary on some other commercials...

Ditto on the thinking the same thing. I mean, someone had to steal an important formula from a mad scientist's lab somewhere in Russia for this thing to exist. Am I right? Eh?

Just doing some research for a Heat Transfer class I'm in and ran across your page.

Once heated, an electric stove boils water faster than a gas stove. However, the time it takes to heat the electric stove is a lot longer than the instant heat from a flame. It's not easily controllable for heat, though.

The idea is that the ceramic stove conducts heat about 35% better than its electric counterpart. And, unlike a flame that spews heat out the sides and in all 3-dimensions, all the energy in this stove is concentrated to the pot. The whole pot is in contact with the stove, and thus, heats up faster.

Also, ceramic can get much hotter than a flame. It also heats up much faster than electric.

It's awesome.

dear lord. its called induction heating. look it up. high frequency, high amperage unit induces heat into a medium- the cooking vessel- which mind you, has to be made of metal- and has a fluctuating magnetic field. this creates heat, far more efficiently than a typical electric heating element.

just go on youtube and search for inductance heating. fascinating stuff.
